Nano One believes that cost-effective production of nanostructured cathode materials can address pent-up global demand for better batteries. It is a $2-3 billion market and cathode materials are found in the lithium ion batteries that power consumer electronics, electric vehicles and industrial storage.

Lithium ion batteries have two electrodes, the anode and the cathode, that transmit lithium ions through an electrolyte with a porous membrane to separate the electrodes. The electrodes are thin foils coated with powdered materials that store and release ions during energy charge and power delivery. The anode material is most commonly made of graphite, while the cathode is of lithium and a matrix of other metals that can include cobalt, manganese, nickel, aluminum or iron in the form of oxides, phosphates, silicates and others.

The Challenge
Cathode powders have great potential to change battery performance and also account for a quarter of the cost of a typical battery cell. The challenge with any advanced material is to boost performance and reduce cost. For batteries, this means reducing the cost of raw materials and processing while boosting capacity, charge and cycling.



Some of the more promising cathode materials being developed in labs around the world are using processes with 50 to 100 steps and production cycles of 4-7 days. Nano One’s technology can use lower grade raw materials and complete a production cycle in less than a day using a three stage process with up to 75% fewer steps. There is less handling, lower cost capital equipment, no waste solvents, 90-95% yield, many fewer failure points, higher safety and flexibility to run different material formulations in a controlled and sealed environment.


Nano One has discovered and is developing patented and scalable processing technology to make high performance energy storage materials affordable for the lithium-ion batteries used in consumer electronics, vehicles and industrial storage.

The core technology assembles low-cost raw materials in solution (such as lithium, cobalt, magnesium) at high rates of production, prior to industrial driers and kilns completing the reaction. The three-stage process can produce many kinds of ceramic powders, uses equipment common to industry and is already being engineered, with industrial partners NORAM and BC Research, for high volume production and rapid commercialization.

Nano One’s advantage is a low cost process to enable high volume production of a wide range of advanced materials. The first target market is $2-3 billion in lithium ion battery cathode materials.

The patented technology enables rapid formation of high performance nano-scale structures early in a three-stage production cycle. Innovative control of particle size eliminates the need for repetitive grinding, milling, filtering and prolonged thermal treatment that are common to other dominant industrial processes.

Crystal structures are formed from inexpensive raw materials reacting at mild temperatures under atmospheric pressures in fast acting, versatile conditions. Through clever manipulations, the process avoids complexing agents, surfactants, templates, emulsifiers and other chemicals.

Mr. Blondal has 26 years of experience as a professional engineer, managing high growth technology in a career that has spanned materials handling, medical devices, industrial printing, nuclear fusion and materials science. He is credited with eight patents issued in Canada, US and foreign jurisdictions. He has served in various roles at Fluor, Andronic Devices, Creo, Kodak, and alternative energy start-up General Fusion, including Engineer, Project Engineer, Product Manager, Technology Manager and Director of Environmental and Regulatory Affairs.

Mr. Blondal brings significant experience in systems engineering, physics and business. As Product and Technology Manager at Creo and Kodak, he led strategically vital initiatives valued at $20M annually to leverage software, laser and chemical systems for high-quality printing.

Dr. Stephen Campbell
PhD, CSci, CChem, MRSC and 25+ yrs leading industrial automotive research in electrochemical systems with 19 issued patents
Dr. Campbell joined Nano One in September 2015 as Principal Scientist working with a multi-disciplinary team that includes scientists, engineers, industrial partners, and academic collaborators. He works closely with the executive team to accelerate business objectives, build on Nano One’s portfolio of intellectual property and identify commercial growth opportunities in energy storage with a focus on cathode materials suited to electric vehicle applications. Dr. Campbell is investigating the fundamental properties of Nano One’s materials; establishing process, structure and function relationships; and developing strategies to control and tune the nanostructure and interfacial chemistries of cathode materials for optimal electrochemical performance and cost-effective production.

Prior to his appointment at Nano One, Dr. Campbell served 7 years as Principal Scientist at Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation Corp. and also he held key roles at Ballard Power Systems as Principal Scientist and Senior Scientist between 1994 and 2008. Dr. Campbell has 20+ patents to his name and adds 20 years’ of hands-on experience in industrial research developing new technologies through to series production for the automotive sector. He has developed long-term research strategies for fuel cell stack development and worked closely with globally significant automotive partners in the development, cost reduction, and integration of fuel cells for automotive applications. He is a knowledge expert in electrochemical methods and heterogeneous electro-catalysis. He also brings a proven track record in project management, intellectual property development, business negotiation and government relationships.

Dr. Campbell received his Ph.D. in Semiconductor Electrochemistry from the University of Southampton in 1987 and completed his BSc (Hons.) 1st class in Physical Sciences at Coventry Polytechnic in 1984. From 1987 to 1989 he worked on lithium battery electrolytes in a postdoctoral research fellowship with National Research Council of Canada. From 1989 to 1991, studied methanol oxidation on sub-monolayers of Bismuth on Platinum single crystals as post-doctoral Research Associate at University of Southampton. Between 1991 to 1993, he led a large research group focused on polymer electrolyte lithium battery materials at the University of St. Andrews.

Russell Barton

Lead Engineer
Mr. Barton joined Nano One in 2013 and is responsible for the design, prototyping, integration and optimization of the core technology for the production of nanostructured materials. Mr. Barton has forty years’ experience in materials, mechanical systems and electrochemical systems including eighteen years designing parts and systems for fuel cell products. He was instrumental in designing Ballard Power System’s first commercial product, NEXA, taking components of the design from concept to manufactured product, working with a small team, tight timeline and limited budget.

Mr. Barton has worked with Energizer, Poly Fuel, Ballard and Neptune Dynamics and brings a wealth of knowledge to Nano One in energy storage, chemistry and mechanical systems. Russell is known for his innovative solutions and is credited with 40 patents in the US and foreign jurisdictions.

John Lando

Mr. Lando has 26 years of experience in venture capital management, equity markets and the financing of public companies.
