Uber selected Nvidia’s artificial intelligence systems as it advances its self-driving efforts, which have incorporated real world trials in Pittsburgh and Phoenix, with some 2mln autonomous miles across 50,000 passenger trips.

“Developing safe, reliable autonomous vehicles requires sophisticated AI software and a high-performance GPU computing engine in the vehicle,” said Eric Meyhofer, head of Uber Advanced Technologies Group.

“NVIDIA is a key technology provider to Uber as we bring scalable self-driving cars and trucks to market.”

Jensen Huang, Nvidia chief executive, highlighted that the Uber collaboration will benefit from “AI algorithms that enable vehicles to perceive the world, predict what will happen next and quickly choose the best course of action.”

Aurora, a Silicon Valley start-up, is developing systems for car manufactures such as Volkswagen and Hyundai, and it will be using Nvidia’s ‘Drive Xavier’ AI platform.

“NVIDIA created DRIVE Xavier for companies like Aurora,” Huang said.

He added: “Our two world-class engineering teams share a common understanding of the power of AI and the enormous processing required to enable advanced self-driving cars and mobility-as-a-service solutions.”

Nvidia shares rose nearly 3% in Monday’s pre-market dealing, changing hands at US$221.58.
