Major tech companies like IBM Corp (NASDAQ:IBM) and Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE:BABA) have been scooping up blockchain-related patents left and right.

Software giant Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) has reportedly won a patent for a blockchain-based platform that can prevent spam email, as per a CoinDesk report.

The patent outlines a system that attempts to identify authentic emails and send all others to a spam folder.

"Used properly, the immutability and distributed nature of the blockchain can make it impossible to modify information once it has been committed to the blockchain,” states the patent filing.

In other crypto news, it was announced in early November that Gemini founders and brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss were suing BitInstant founder Charlie Shrem for more than US$32 million in Bitcoin.

The Winklevoss brothers gave Shrem, their advisor at the time, US$750,000 and then an additional US$250,000 to buy Bitcoin on their behalf. The brothers are alleging that Shrem did not give them the full value of Bitcoin at the time.

“Shrem can show by verifiable evidence that he did not take the 5,000 bitcoins (the Winklevosses) accuse him of taking,” stated a filing by Shrem’s attorney Brian E. Klein shared by Cointelegraph.

Shrem had spent a year in prison after being tangled up in the infamous Silk Road scandal, charged with violating anti-money laundering rules by working with a customer who supplied US$1 million in Bitcoin to people buying drugs.

The Cann Report

Michigan voted in favor of Proposal 18-1 in Tuesday’s midterm elections, legalizing recreational use in the state for those 21 years of age or older.

The proposal will also legalize commercial sales of cannabis through state-licensed retailers, subject to a 10% tax.

“The passage of Proposal 1 will open the door for a wide range of cannabis business opportunities,” said Steve Hawkins, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project, to Marijuana Business Daily. “As the first state in the Midwest to create an adult-use market, Michigan is well-positioned to become a leader not only in the region but also nationwide.”

The state’s recreational cannabis market is expected to generate US$1.4 billion to US$1.7 billion in annual sales within a few years of launch, according to a report by the Marijuana Business Daily.

With all the hype surrounding marijuana legalization, it can be easy to forget the growers and cultivators that keep the cannabis market afloat.

Workers in the cannabis industry can be subject to intense radiation from the lights needed to keep grow rooms running.

Raywear Gear has developed a clothing line designed to protect workers from harmful ultraviolet, visible, and infrared rays. Prolonged exposure to these rays can lead to melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

The American Cancer Society found that more people in the US are diagnosed with skin cancer each year than all other types of skin cancer combined with melanoma accounting for three-fourths of skin cancer fatalities.

The California-based company offers long and short sleeve shirts, face guards, beanies and protective eyewear. Raywear is currently accepting pre-orders, offering a bundle for US$99.
