It was announced today Capital Power (TSX: CPX), a power generation company based in Edmonton, has partnered with privately-held wind energy firm Greengate Power to build the first phase of the 300 megawatt (MW) Halkirk Wind Project in the County of Paintearth, Alberta.
According to the companies, the Halkirk I Wind Project, as the first phase is called, is expected to be Alberta’s largest wind energy project when completed. The project, which will have a generating capacity of 150 MW, is expected to start producing revenues in late 2011 or early 2012.
Under the joint venture agreement, Greengate, based in Calgary, Alberta will be in charge of the project’s development while Capital Power will manage its construction and operation. Ownership of the project will be split evenly between both companies.
Greengate has received approval from the Alberta Electric System Operator to connect the Halkirk I Wind Project to a 240 kV transmission line 10km away.
The second and last phase of the project, the Halkirk II Wind Project, will also have a generating capacity of 150 MW.
Capital Power owns and operates about 3.5 thousand MW of power generating capacity in North America with about 31 power plants. The company also has other projects in progress which represents about 1,495 MW of additional capacity.
