Phunware Inc (NASDAQ:PHUN) is boosting its software development kits with new functionalities for its location-based services.
The Austin, Texas-based company told shareholders on Thursday that it was adding landmark routing capabilities to its location-based services platform to allow the applications to display navigation instructions in a user-friendly way.
As part of the new functionality, certain points of interest can be marked as landmarks to enable more visual directions, such as instructing users to “turn left at the front desk” rather than “20 feet.”

Phunware’s executive vice president of product and engineering Matthew Lindenberger said research shows that incorporating landmark information into a turn-by-turn navigation experience is more effective for users.
“We are proud to continually enhance our award-winning platform and Location Based Services capabilities, enabling our customers to create engaging end user experiences,” Lindenberger said in a statement.
The Landmark routing sample code is accessible to developers for both Android and iOS platforms to eliminate the need to design new custom interfaces and allow them to customize features, Phunware said in a statement.
The company recently added additional features to the application, including walk time calculations, voice prompts, and off-route alerts.
Shares of Phunware increased 5.1% in Thursday morning trading at US$1.23.
