Media Central Corporation Inc (CSE:FLYY), the owner of weekly Toronto-based newspaper NOW Magazine, said Thursday that it is boosting the paper’s editorial team with two new appointments.

The company said the new senior editors will help to spearhead the paper’s growth and direction in 2020.

Toronto-based Media Central acquired the alternative news and entertainment paper in November 2019.

Seasoned NOW journalists Kevin Ritchie and Enzo DiMatteo are taking on the roles of editor and political editor respectively.

Former senior culture editor Ritchie will oversee the content across NOW’s three platforms, including the print magazine, nowtoronto.com and CannCentral.com.

"It's an honour to be appointed Editor of NOW Magazine at such an exciting time in the publication's history," Ritchie, a 10-year veteran of NOW, said in a statement.

"After spending the better part of three years heading up our culture coverage, I'm looking forward to working with our tireless group of editors, writers, critics, designers and photographers to continue expanding our daily coverage across all sections. The city is going through huge challenges and changes and I'm committed to building on NOW's legacy as a progressive, alternative voice in Toronto news, lifestyle and arts journalism."

Ritchie will also concentrate on helping to digitize and migrate the brand’s nearly 1.4 million readers to its digital platform, nowtoronto.com, where the company is expanding its focus to more frequent daily coverage.

Alternative voices

Incoming political editor DiMatteo is an award-winning writer who has worked with NOW since 1989.

"NOW's political coverage has long been a defining feature of the publication and I am looking forward to continuing NOW's place in important conversations taking place in our politics not only locally, but nationally and internationally as well," DiMatteo said.

"It's a challenging time in the history of the planet and for news media in general and now more than ever we need alternative voices to inject a little balance to help us make real sense of the tumult going on around us."

With over 25 million annual readers, NOW is one of Toronto’s leading weekly news and entertainment voices.

Media Central is an independent and alternative media company focused on acquiring and developing high-quality publishing assets.
