So-called spheronization test work - a sizing and shaping exercise - was carried out on material taken from the mine.
"Spheronization is done to optimize the particle surface area to achieve the highest performance in the anode," the firm said in a statement, adding that those produced were well rounded spherical graphite particles similar to products on the market.
"This is significant as presently all-natural spherical graphite is produced from flake graphite," noted the firm. It produces vein graphite.
Ceylon said it had not yet undertaken electrochemical characterization of its vein graphite, but published papers have shown that such graphite exhibits “many favorable characteristics such as high reversible capacity … Among the natural graphite varieties, vein graphite typically possesses very high crystallinity together with high natural purity, which in turn reduces the cost of purification".
Graphite mined in Sri Lanka is known to be among the purest in the world, but currently accounts for less than 1% of world graphite production.
Also in today's statement, Ceylon said that Robert Marvin had resigned as a director of the company.
Shares were unchanged in Toronto at C$0.12.
